Celebration of Carers Week 2008

To celebrate Carers Week a number of different events will be taking place in Ilford.

Drop into the Town Hall, High Road, Ilford, IG1 1DD on Friday 13 June 2008 between 11am-3pm. Activities include: music; health checks; information advice and refreshments and the launch of the Redbridge Carers' Emergency Scheme.

Redbridge Carers Support Service are holding a number of events including: Yoga Classes on the 9th June and a special presentation event - on the 11th June - highlighting the work of the Older Carers Projects with guest actress Pam Ferris. Your Shout

If you use local mental health services or care for someone who does and you want to have a say about how mental health services will be delivered in the future then come along to Your Shout on Thursday 5th June 2008, 2pm to 4pm .

The event is being held in the Aldborough Room, Fullwell Cross Library, High Street, Barkingside, Ilford, IG6 2EA

Introduction to Mental Health & Mental Incapacity Acts

Robert Keys, Mental Health Act Manger for NELMHT will be holding a briefing session on the Mental Health and Mental Incapacity Acts. The venue is our offices: 98-100 Ilford Lane, Ilford IG1 2LD from 9.30am to 12pm

Publishing and New Media Workshop

thinkarts are running a workshop on Tuesday 8th July from 10.30am to 12.30 at the OT Department, Goodmayes Hospital. The training is for volunteers who are interested in developing their skills to work on the thinkarts newsletter production.

If you are interested in the arts, magazine publishing or new media this is an opportunity to gain skills and experiences.

Safeguarding Adults in Redbridge

Everyone has a right to feel safe and to be treated with dignity and respect in their daily lives. We have an awareness raising campaign in Redbridge to tie in with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15th June 2008.

Most people who need support are well cared for by families, friends, neighbours and services. But even so some people are abused and exploited and we want to do everything we can to stop this happening.

You can help - by being aware that such things can happen. You can make a difference by finding out if there is anything you can do to help, and reporting concerns you may have. All concerns, including those reported anonymously, will be taken seriously and dealt with sensitively.

Information stalls and advice will be available at the following venues, from 10am - noon: John Telford Health Centre, 17th June; South Woodford Health Centre 18th June; Hainault Health Centre 19th June and Seven Kings Health Centre 20th June.

Fit for 2012 - Sports Day July 3rd Goodmayes Hospital

Fit for 2012 - on July 3 - will celebrate physical fitness and the arts at Goodmayes Hospital. It will be a fun filled day including: five-a-side football; tai-chi; wellbeing demonstrations; rounders; tug of war; an acoustic music session and displays from Thinkarts.

"The Sports Day", according to John Harrington who successfully organised last year's event, "is an opportunity to engage with the wider community who are involved in the provision of Mental Health Services or associated services and present the extent to which an holistic approach is being adopted that incorporates physical wellbeing in the programmes offered to Mental Health Service Users.

"Last year was a real success so let's make this year's Sports Day an even bigger one!"

Attitudes to Mental Illness 2008 Research Report

The latest national statistics on Attitudes to Mental Illness produced by the Department of Health were released on 8 May 2008.

Since March 1993, the Department of Health has placed a set of questions on TNS's Face-to-Face Consumer Omnibus about public attitudes towards mental illness. From 1993 to 1997 the questions were asked on an annual basis and then every third year up until 2003.

Since 2007 the survey has again been carried out annually. The surveys serve as a benchmark, enabling measurement of whether attitudes are improving or worsening over time.
