A user led conference is being held - this Thursday (6th July)- to identify six key priorities for mental health service provision in Redbridge. Mark Leveson, Head of User Participation & Development, at the London Development Centre for Mental Health, and a service user will chair the Day.

The event runs from 10.00am to 3.30pm and the venue is the Shout Cafe, 3 Clements Road, Ilford next door to the Cine World Cinema.

Confidence Building Group

Anxiety Care is running a Confidence Building Group every Thursday - 7pm to 8.45pm - at the Redbridge Resource Centre, 497-499 Ley Street, Ilford, IG2 7QX. No pre-booking is required - just turn up. Please note, there is a charge of £5 per session.

Make a Difference by Supporting Volunteers

Lesley Harrison has recently taken up post as Volunteer Development Officer at Redbridge Concern in order to set up the (Capital Volunteering Redbridge) Supported Volunteering Scheme. The key to being able to provide worthwhile volunteering opportunities to people with mental health problems (or those wishing to volunteer in services for people with mental health problems) is finding out what volunteering possibilities may be available in the Borough. Please, therefore, can you help us by filling in the questionnaire which can be download here.

Self-Harm Video Project

Newham Asian Women's Project (NAWP) is producing a training video to raise awareness and increase understanding of issues surrounding self-harm for both young people and professionals. NAWP are looking for young people who self-harm to get involved with and participate in the making the video. The project team are also looking for professionals working with young people who self-harm who are willing to contribute and be part of a nationwide advisory group.

Women at Risk - The Mental Health of Women in Contact with the Judicial system

This good practice guidance for mental health services for women prepares health, social care and prison staff for the transfer of responsibility of prison health to the NHS by April 2006. It also considers the role which can be played by local authorities and voluntary organisations in the prevention of offending or re-offending and in supporting vulnerable women. Promoting health and well being in later life

Promoting health and well being in later life - A first report from the UK Inquiry into Mental Health and Well-Being in Later Life has just been published by Age Concern and the Mental Health Foundation. The report says that action is needed to remove the barriers that prevent older people from participating in society. It recommends that local authorities take a lead role in partnership with the NHS, voluntary organisations, business representatives, community groups and with individuals to develop programmes that promote positive mental health and well-being in later life.

Child and adolescent mental health

The number of children with certain types of mental health disorders has more than doubled in the past 30 years, with a million experiencing problems at any one time in England, doctors' leaders warned. About one in 10 children will experience a clinically recognised mental health disorder between the ages of one and 15, says the report Child and adolescent mental health - A guide for professionals .
