Redbridge Equalities & Community Council General Meeting

Monday 18 March 2019

Start: 19:30
Finish: 21:00

People are attacked and abused because they are in a wheelchair, they have problems seeing or hearing, have learning difficulties or mental health problems, are on the autistic spectrum, they have a disfigurement.... In some cases people have been killed or driven to suicide. If you look at the police statistics you will find there are very few reported incidents of disability hate crime. But research shows that the majority of disabled people have experienced a hate crime. So most of it is not being reported or recorded. People might not know that these are crimes. Sometimes they do not have the confidence to report or are not taken seriously. Or sometimes a crime is reported but not flagged up as motivated or aggravated by prejudice against people with a disability.

We are very pleased to have Ruth Bashall– Chief Executive of Stay Safe East - as our guest speaker who will talk about disability hate crime and what they are doing to expose and address it.

Doors open at 7pm, the venue is accessible and there will be light refreshments.

Venue: New Hall, Gants Hill United Reformed Church. Ethelbert Gardens, Gants Hill, Essex, IG2 6UN
