Voluntary Sector Network Meeting

Wednesday 8 November 2017

Start: 13:00
Finish: 14:30

What will Redbridge be like in the future? Change seems inevitable. There is a huge unmet need across Greater London for housing, and some of the new housing will inevitably be built here. In particular, there is a need for good quality, secure homes for people on low and average incomes, many of whom can't afford to buy somewhere to live when the average price of a home in London is over £470,000. The opening of the Elizabeth line in 2018-19 will also bring changes, as the south of Redbridge becomes more accessible from central London, including the City, as well as from Docklands. A further change affects the finances of local government – financial support from Westminster for local councils is expected to fall by 77 percent between 2015 and 2020, raising questions about how councils can continue to deliver local services.

Two speakers will present different approaches to these issues.

  • Simon Parker, the Council's head of strategy, will speak about theRedbridge 2025project, which is consulting local people about different scenarios for what Redbridge might be like in the future. How can the council maintain what is good in the borough while taking advantage of new opportunities, and do so without increasing social exclusion of some residents?
  • Meenakshi Sharmawill represent NOISE (Neighbourhoods of Ilford South Engage), which campaigns for development to take place in a way which relates to the needs of all the different parts of the borough. NOISE were recently mentioned in thenational mediaregarding their concerns about the proposed redevelopment of Sainsbury's in Ilford.

Presentations will be followed by questions and discussion.

The Voluntary Sector Network is a regular meeting for people from local voluntary groups to share news and best practice. We meet every month except January and August.

Everyone involved with a local voluntary or community group is welcome - just turn up!

There are sandwiches from 12.30pm, and the meeting lasts from 1 to 2.30pm. We usually begin by going through the minutes of the last meeting, and then we hear from people who have attended the various partnership bodies which coordinate the work of the voluntary and public sectors in Redbridge.

The rest of the meeting consists of speakers on that month's theme. This raises awareness of what is going on in the local public and voluntary sectors, cascading information and generalising best practice.

Agendas and minutes for past meetings are available on the Voluntary Sector Network page (in the right-hand column)
